At least three vehicles were towed from a busy Kansas City highway after a large pothole caused problems for drivers Wednesday morning.

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation were called at about 6:30 a.m. to southbound Interstate 35 near Southwest Trafficway, according to Markl Johnson, a spokesman for MoDOT.

The rain made repairing the pothole more difficult because it kept washing the asphalt mixture away. But Johnson said after a few attempts, the hole in the center lane appeared to have been successfully filled.

Kansas City police officers were also called to assist with traffic. About 10 cars needed assistance and three were towed as a result of damage from the pothole, said Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman with the police department.

Maintenance crews will monitor the area, Johnson said.
