A young girl has died after a fire broke out at a Northland house, sending her and two others to the hospital Thursday morning, police said.

At around 12:25 a.m., police officers, along with firefighters with the Kansas City Fire Department, responded to the blaze at a single-story home in the 4000 block of North Chestnut Avenue, Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.

When crews arrived, they found a man and a woman outside of the residence suffering from burns.

Firefighters entered the residence and found the girl suffering from severe burns. All three were transported to an area hospital. The girl, who was under age 10, died shortly after arriving.

The other two victims were treated for serious burns and are in critical condition, Becchina said.

The Kansas City Police Department’s bomb and arson unit is investigating the fire, which is standard practice.

No foul play is immediately suspected, Becchina said.

During a second search of the home, firefighters found a couple pets that had perished in the fire. No firefighters were injured battling the blaze, Fire Education Specialist Jason Spreitzer, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department, told The Star.

The Kansas City Fire Department has smoke alarms available to Kansas City residents by calling 816-513-4648.
