3 people critically injured after fire swept through home in Kansas City’s Northland
Three people were in critical condition at area hospitals after a fire swept through a home in Kansas City’s Northland early Thursday, a fire department spokesman said.
Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after midnight at a single-story home near Northeast Russell Road and North Chestnut Avenue, said Fire Education Specialist Jason Spreitzer, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.
The first crews arrived in under three minutes and reported that two victims, who were able to communicate with firefighters, were in the front yard of the house. Heavy smoke was pouring from the house and flames were visible, he said.
Firefighters searched the home and quickly found the third victim. All three were taken to hospitals, where they were in critical condition.
“Incidents like this are tragic for everyone,” Spreitzer said.
During a second search of the home, firefighters found a couple pets that had perished in the fire. No firefighters were injured battling the blaze.
The Kansas City Police Department’s bomb and arson unit is investigating the fire, which is common practice. The fire remains under investigation for its cause and origin, Spreitzer said.
The Kansas City Fire Department has smoke alarms available to Kansas City residents by calling 816-513-4648.
