Bicyclist dies after being struck by pickup truck along 40 Highway in Independence

A bicyclist died after being struck by a pickup truck on Friday morning along U.S. Highway 40 in Independence, according to police.

The crash happened around 6:20 a.m. near the intersection at Harvard Lane after the bicyclist entered the roadway, Independence police said in a statement on Twitter.

The driver of a Ford F-150 was heading west on U.S. Highway 40 when the crash occurred, police said. The bicyclist was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where they later died.

Police are waiting to release the identity of the person killed until a next-of-kin notification is made

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The driver of the pickup is cooperating with authorities, police said.
