Royals owner John Sherman named Kansas Citian of the Year by KC Chamber of Commerce

Kansas City Royals owner John Sherman has been named the Kansas Citian of the Year by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

Sherman, a self-made billionaire, was presented the award Tuesday night during a banquet celebrating the organization’s 134th year. Past winners include Buck O’Neil, Lucile Bluford, U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II and former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes.

In winning the title, Sherman was recognized for his success as an area businessman. He helped build up two energy companies — LPG Services Group and Inergy L.P. The latter merged with Crestwood Holdings, a propane supplier now worth $6 billion.

Sherman also has long been involved in local philanthropic and community causes. He has worked with organizations including the Ewing M. Kauffman Foundation, UMKC Foundation, Truman Presidential Library and World War I Museum. He and his wife co-founded the Sherman Family Foundation in 2006, which supports education initiatives.

In 2019, Sherman purchased the Royals from David Glass with the support of a group of co-owners in a deal valued at $1 billion. Sherman is the third owner of the baseball franchise since it was founded in 1969.
