Kansas City metro adds more than 600 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths Saturday

The Kansas City metropolitan area added more than 600 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths on Saturday.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas gained 635 new cases, for a total of 27,738 to date.

The metro has not seen an increase of more than 600 cases since July 30, when a record 685 cases were reported.

Part of the reason for Saturday’s sharp increase may be that Wyandotte County did not report new numbers Friday. It gained 102 cases Saturday. The county’s two-week average for new cases had been 51.

However several areas within the metro saw a steep daily rise. Johnson County had 237 new cases, Jackson County had 136, Kansas City had 118, Clay County had 35 and Platte County had seven.

The seven day rolling average for new cases in the metro sits at 363. One week ago, it was 422. Two weeks ago, it was 342.

The recent deaths were reported in Jackson County, raising the metro’s total to 384.

On Saturday, Missouri reported 74,257 cases including 1,425 deaths. The seven day positive test rate was 11.4%. The overall positive test rate was 8.2%.

Kansas, which last updated its numbers Friday, has at least 36,856 cases including 419 deaths. The overall positive test rate was 10.1%.

Across the country, more than 5.6 million people have contracted the virus and more than 175,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
