Three killed, six injured in overnight car crashes in the Kansas City area

Three people are dead and six are injured after four serious vehicle crashes in Kansas City and Independence overnight, according to police.

In a post on Twitter Saturday afternoon, Kansas City police said many of the crashes were being investigated for impaired driving.

The first crash occurred in Kansas City at 350 Highway and Manchester just after 7:30 p.m., Kansas City Police Department Spokeswoman Doaa El-Ashkar said in an email.

A gray Lexus was driving at high speed when it lost control, left the road, went airborne and landed on its roof in a a grassy median. Two passengers were ejected from the car. One was declared dead at the scene and the other was brought to the hospital with critical injuries. The driver, police said, was brought to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Independence police responded to a second fatal crash around 11:30 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the Independence Police Department. A motorcycle, police said, left the roadway near U.S. 24 and Arlington and crashed into a building and fence. The rider, police said, died from their injuries.

The third fatal crash occurred just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Kansas City police. A Chevy Trax LT, police said, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 435 and struck a Chevy Cruze head-on just north of Interstate 70 before hitting a concrete barrier.

The driver of the Chevy Trax LT, police said, minor injuries. The front seat passenger of the Cruze was transported to the hospital and died shortly later. Another passenger, police said, had non-life threatening injuries.

A non-fatal crash also occurred in Kansas City just before 1:45 a.m. Saturday, according to Kansas City police.

A driver in a Honda Pilot, police said, lost control of the car while driving south on Charlotte Street near 19th Street. The car hit a curb, went through a chain link fence and over the side of the roadway.

The passenger in the car was brought to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries after the Kansas City Fire Department spent two hours working to free them from the vehicle, police said.
