Lawson district ends summer school after coach, students test positive for COVID-19
The Lawson School District in Missouri announced Wednesday afternoon that it was canceling its summer school after a coach and students tested positive for COVID-19.
The district located northeast of Kansas City in Ray County said in a letter to students, staff and parents posted to its website that at as result of the spread of the disease, it concluded summer school at Lawson Middle School, 602 Bob Gill Dr., and Southwest Elementary school, 307 W Moss St.
“The District was informed by the Ray County Health Department that a staff member and two more students have tested positive for COVID-19 in addition to the one positive case notification from yesterday,” Lawson superintendent Roger Schmitz said in the letter dated Wednesday.
“All cases, including the first one reported yesterday are believed to be related as these individuals were participating in an extra-curricular camp together.”
A few of the students who attended the camp also served as tutoring mentors at both the middle and elementary school during summer school, the district said.
“Even though the A+ student tutors were wearing face masks as required, summer school students may have been exposed to the A+ student(s) who tested positive or those who are close contacts,” Schmitz said. “If you believe you have been exposed or have symptoms of COVID-19, please contact your primary care provider or local health department for further guidance.
“The ending of summer school prematurely was a precautionary step to “help ensure that all can remain healthy in order to start the regular school year in August,” Schmitz said.
