A semi truck entering an on-ramp to Interstate 435 hit and killed a woman late Wednesday night in northeast Kansas City, police said.

According to the Kansas City Police Department, the semi was preparing to merge onto northbound I-435 from Front Street just after 10 p.m. when it hit the female pedestrian.

The driver told police he had looked over his shoulder to check traffic before merging. When he looked forward again, a woman was in the road in front of the semi, he said.

The driver said other vehicles in the left lane prevented him from changing lanes and he struck the woman with the left front of the semi. She was pronounced dead at the scene.The driver was not injured.

The incident marked Kansas City’s 53rd fatality crash this year.
