Fireworks injuries sent 35 people to KU Health System. Here’s how they were hurt

Though the major fireworks shows were canceled this year, people across the Kansas City metro made their own displays — and 35 ended up at the University of Kansas Health System with injuries.

Sparklers and mortars caused nearly half of the injuries. Fountains, roman candles, smoke bombs and bottle rockets made up about a quarter of the combined injuries. The other people received unspecified injuries.

Patients ranged in age from 2 to 55 and 54% were male.

Seven of the 35 people who were hurt were admitted to the hospital.

According to the health system, 55% of the injuries were to hands. Injuries to the face and eyes and legs and feet accounted for 15% each. Arm and torso injuries were the least frequent.

So many fireworks were set off across the city that the National Weather Service issued an air quality advisory after Fourth of July celebrations left a layer of smoke Sunday morning over Kansas City causing “very unhealthy air quality.”
