Air quality advisory issued for Kansas City because of lingering firework smoke

The National Weather Service has issued an air quality advisory after a night of July Fourth celebrations left a layer of firework smoke hanging over Kansas City.

“We have a shallow inversion and very light/calm winds which is keeping smoke trapped in the lowest few hundred feet of the atmosphere,” the weather service tweeted Sunday morning. “It may be causing problems for those sensitive to pollution or w/ respiratory issues.”

Thick smoke from fireworks fired hours earlier hung in the air over I-435 in Overland Park Sunday morning, July 5, 2020. The National Weather Service issued a special weather advisory warning of unhealthy conditions due to an air inversion that kept the smoke close to the ground.

The weather service is urging older adults, children and anyone with heart or lung disease to remain indoors Sunday morning while the “very unhealthy air quality” persists.

“Everyone else should avoid physical activity until the smoke clears,” the weather service tweeted, adding that those with a morning run ritual may want to wait a few hours before hitting the pavement.

The air quality is expected to improve mid-morning, likely between 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday.
