Mizzou journalism student awarded scholarship created in honor of former Star editor

Kelly Kullman, a senior at the University of Missouri in Columbia journalism school, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship named for a former Kansas City Star editor and columnist, the Missouri School of journalism announced in a news release Thursday.

The Jerry Heaster Scholarship in Business Journalism was created by his friends, families and colleagues after Heaster’s death in 2012, according to the release.

Heaster was an award-winning editor and columnist for The Star and the scholarship was intended to encourage students to study business journalism.

Kullman, from Cole Camp, Missouri, is studying journalism with an emphasis on print and digital. She is currently a reporter at the Missouri Business Alert, a digital newsroom run through the Missouri School of Journalism.

“I think Jerry Heaster’s daughter, Hope, said it best: ‘Kelly is like my dad,’” Randy Smith, Missouri School of Journalism professor and the Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair of Business Journalism said in the release. “Like Jerry Heaster, Kelly has worked hard at an off-campus job to afford her education. She has excelled at business journalism, and her new-found passion has provided new employment opportunities.”
