3-year-old Kansas girl dies after being hit by delivery truck backing out of driveway

A 3-year-old girl died Wednesday after she was hit by a delivery truck backing out of a driveway in rural Paola, Kansas, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s office.

Shortly after 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, dispatchers received a call about an injury crash where a child had been struck at a home in the 39000 block of West 287th Street, which is west of Pressonville Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined that a man driving a 2019 GMC delivery box truck was backing out of the driveway when the child was hit, according to the sheriff’s office.

There appears to have been no criminal threat. Drugs and alcohol were not involved, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office, along with the Wellsville Fire Department and the Miami County Emergency Services responded to the crash. The Johnson County Sheriff’s office and the Kansas Highway Patrol are helping investigate.
