KC and Wyandotte County have highest number of coronavirus cases in metro area

The Kansas City metropolitan area saw a slight uptick in its number of coronavirus cases with 36 added Saturday.

Kansas City and Wyandotte County report the greatest number of cases with 412 each.

Johnson County in Kansas had 369. Jackson County had 268, Clay County reported 56 and Platte County was unchanged at 27.

The metro area has a total of 1,544 cases including 82 deaths, as of Saturday.

Since COVID-19 began spreading in Kansas City, police have responded to more domestic violence incidents.

From March 24, when stay-at-home orders went into effect, until Thursday, 911 calls for domestic violence in Kansas City climbed 26% compared to the same time last year, said Capt. Tim Hernandez, who supervises the Kansas City Police Department’s special victims’ unit, tasked with investigating domestic violence, child abuse and sex assault crimes. Law enforcement in other jurisdictions, including Johnson and Platte counties, also reported increases.

Kansas City, Kansas, police said they have seen a decrease in domestic violence calls but the calls they have received have been more serious and more likely to involve a deadly weapon.

Stay-at-home orders for Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties were extended to May 15.

Kansas’ order covering Johnson and Wyandotte counties expires May 3.

On Saturday, Missouri reported 5,517 COVID-19 cases. Kansas said it had 1,790.
