Fire damages historic St. John the Divine Church building in Kansas City, Kansas

Fire severely damaged a historic church building in Kansas City, Kansas, Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was reported about 5:15 p.m. at St. John the Divine Church at 2511 Metropolitan Avenue, according to the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department.

The church was not being used at the time. It closed in 1992.

Assistant Chief Bryan Hendin said heavy smoke and fire were showing by the time firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported in the fire, Hendin said. A family was rescued from a building next to the church.

The origin and the cause of the blaze were under investigation Tuesday night.
