Three injured in serious wreck on U.S. 24 following police chase in Independence

Three people were injured in a head-on crash following a police chase in Independence Friday afternoon, police said.

Around 2 p.m., an Independence police officer attempted to stop a car that was allegedly driving erratically on Kentucky Road just east of Missouri 291, said Officer Jodi Grooms, an Independence Police Department spokeswoman.

The vehicle, Grooms said, fled into oncoming traffic, eventually striking another car on U.S. 24 near Concord Circle in Independence.

One person in the suspect vehicle and two people in the other car were taken to a hospital, Grooms said. Information on the extent of their injuries was not available Friday afternoon.

The police chase lasted for less than two minutes before the crash, she said.

U.S. 24 was closed in the area for about two hours Friday and reopened shortly before 4 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
