Fire heavily damages Olathe home Friday afternoon, family displaced

A family was displaced Friday afternoon after a fire heavily damaged their home in Olathe, according to the fire department.

Olathe firefighters were called to the 2300 block of West Layton Drive around 1:30 p.m. after smoke alarms alerted a teen to the fire, the fire department said in a Twitter post. A video from the fire department showed flames at the front of the house and in an area above the garage.

The teen was able to escape and no injuries were reported, but the family’s cat was killed, the fire department said.

The family who lives at the home was displaced as a result of the fire and is staying with relatives.

Firefighters believe a power cord started the blaze.
