Puppies donning Patrick Mahomes jerseys and other Chiefs gear brought their A-game to Bar K’s first annual Puppy Bowl.

Dozens of dogs participated in the four 15-minute games Saturday afternoon as fans both human and canine continued the buildup of excitement to Super Bowl Sunday when the Chiefs face the 49ers in Miami.

“Obviously we love the Chiefs, love our team,” said David Hensley, owner of Bar K, which launched in August 2018. “And of course a big tradition with any Super Bowl is to have a Puppy Bowl and it was something we just had to do. We love dogs, we love puppies and we’ve got a perfect space for it, so we thought we’d join the fun and let the dogs really be able to celebrate the Super Bowl. I think a lot of times with things like this, they’re kind of left out, left at home while you go to a Super Bowl party so we thought we’d throw a party specifically for the puppies and dogs.”

As a referee monitored the play, owners and other spectators cheered on the puppies who took to the field.

Jennifer Shore Conner brought her 19-week-old dog Maggie to compete. Conner said the yellow Labrador was still developing her skills, but was hopeful Maggie could provide some defense and maybe even get a turnover.

“It’s a great atmosphere getting ready for the Super Bowl and who doesn’t love puppies?” Conner said.
