Man killed in Friday morning house fire at 56th St. and Hardesty Ave. in Kansas City

Firefighters battling a blaze that left one dead early Friday were hindered by several exploding oxygen tanks.

The fire was reported shortly after 6 a.m. in the 5600 block of Hardesty Avenue, said Kansas City Fire Department Deputy Chief Jimmy Walker.

Crews found heavy fire coming from the one-story home when they arrived at the scene.

One person was outside and said their uncle was still in the house.

Walker said there were multiple explosions from oxygen tanks which impeded making entry.

When they got inside, they found a 61-year-old man who was deceased.

The house didn’t have working smoke detectors, Walker said.

The fire department gives out free smoke detectors. Anyone who needs one can call the department at 816-513-4648.
