Drivers urged to use caution on KC area bridges, overpasses and snow-covered roads
Drivers were urged to use extra caution Monday morning after a winter storm dumped up to 8 inches of snow in parts of the Kansas City area.
“If you’re headed out the door soon, please drive with caution . . . especially on bridges and overpasses,” the Kansas City district of the Missouri Department of Transportation said in a tweet early Monday. “That also goes for the highways.
Rush hour got off to a good start, the transportation department said.
“We don’t want to jinx it — but drivers are doing a great job this morning,” it said in a tweet. “Continue to take it slow as you head to work. If possible, delay your start time. A second round of winter weather is headed our way. Be safe.”
The second round of snow is expected Monday afternoon, with a dusting to 3 inches of snow possible. The heavier amounts will be south of Interstate 70.
The snow could create additional headaches on the roads.
The Kansas Department of Transportation were urging drivers to give themselves extra time Monday morning to clear off their windows before they headed out. It also urged drivers to wear their seat belts and to drive the speed limit.
With many schools canceling classes for Monday, the Kansas Highway Patrol urged people to stay at home.
“Snow days from school due to bad weather & road conditions means it’s much safer to stay home,” said Trooper Candice Breshears, a spokeswoman for the highway patrol in the Kansas City metro area, on Twitter. She urged parents not to drive their kids to the movies, mall or restaurants.
Pedestrians were urged to use caution while walking on sidewalks and parking lots, especially those left untreated.
