Runner and his dog struck by car on Blue Valley Parkway in Overland Park

A pedestrian was critically injured and his dog killed when they were hit by a car early Thursday in Overland Park, police said.

The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. as the two were running through the intersection of Blue Valley Parkway and 123rd Street, said Officer John Lacy, a spokesman for the Overland Park Police Department.

The pedestrian was running east on 123rd when they were hit by the car, which was headed north on Blue Valley Parkway. The car had a green light, Lacy said.

The dog died at the scene. The runner was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Lacy said.

Overland Park police have asked drivers to avoid the area while they investigate the crash.
