Zoo introduces second baby giraffe to Kansas City via livestream

A Kansas City Zoo giraffe has given birth to a healthy baby boy, the zoo announced this week.

The baby giraffe was born at 11:29 p.m. Sept. 30, the zoo said in a statement. He weighs 135 pounds and stands 5 feet 5 inches tall.

The zoo said it will be a few weeks before guests will be able to see the new baby in person, but in the meantime, the public can watch him bonding with his mother on the zoo’s YouTube livestream.

The calf is the first for the zoo’s 6-year-old giraffe, Makali, who came to Kansas City from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2014. His father is 9-year-old Hamisi, the only male among the zoo’s giraffe herd.

Following Dixie’s birth earlier this year, this is Hamisi’s second calf fathered at the Kansas City Zoo.
