A new report from Mayo Clinic said that around 7.5 million Americans are experiencing long haul COVID-19, with around 2 million people unable to return to work. A new national study that the University of Kansas Health System is participating in is looking to find out why COVID-19 is impacting people for this long.

Dr. Mario Castro announced at Monday’s medical briefing that the hospital is working with RECOVER to take a deeper look at long COVID and its symptoms.

They currently have 20 individuals signed up locally to participate in the trial, joining 17,000 other patients nationwide.

WHO CAN SIGN UP?

The trial is only studying people ages 18 and up.

Researchers are looking for people who’ve had COVID in the past two years whose symptoms went away, those with lingering symptoms and even those who haven’t been infected with COVID-19 to participate.

“We’re looking at the whole spectrum of the disease, from acute infection to patients that were infected a year ago,” Dr. Castro said.

He’s pushing to enroll people of color and people living in rural areas, but anyone can sign up.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

If you’re interested in participating in the trial, you can email Covid-research-team@kumc.edu for more information. You can also sign up here to learn more about the trial.
