Kansas City metro adds 273 new COVID-19 infections and one death Sunday

Health officials in the Kansas City metro area Sunday reported an additional 273 coronavirus cases and one death.

In total, the virus has infected 25,473 metro residents, including 374 who have died.

The additional cases come after the area, which includes Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas, reported 10 more deaths Saturday — the largest daily death count in weeks.

As of Sunday, Johnson and Wyandotte counties continued to outpace other parts of the metro in the number of virus-related deaths, with 108 and 107, respectively.

There have been 6,430 infections reported to date in Johnson County and 5,284 in Wyandotte County.

Kansas City has seen the highest number of infections with 7,649, including 66 deaths. Earlier this week, Mayor Quinton Lucas extended the city’s emergency order, requiring face masks indoors until at least mid-January.

On Saturday night, Lucas dropped by about eight business in the city to observe social distancing protocols and report back what he saw on Twitter. One “weak spot” he noticed: semi-covered rooftop bar spaces.

“Several other places had what appeared to be full-fledged dance parties inside,” the mayor wrote. “Mask requirements for indoor places of public accommodation at least for staff were generally followed, at least when I walked in.”

In Jackson County, there have been 4,560 infections, including 53 deaths.

Clay County has reported 1,143 infections, including 30 deaths. In Platte County, 407 residents have tested positive for the virus, including 10 who have died.

Throughout Missouri, 67,475 residents have been infected by COVID-19, including 1,367 who have died, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The overall positive test rate was 8%.

In Kansas, which last updated its data Friday, there had been 33,885 infections and 402 deaths. The overall positive test rate was 9.9%.

More than 5.3 million Americans have tested positive for the virus, including 169,841 who have died.
