Kansas City metro reports more than 400 new COVID-19 cases, adds two deaths

The Kansas City metropolitan area added more than 400 new COVID-19 cases Friday and two more deaths were reported.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas gained 425 new cases, raising the total number of cases to 19,544.

The positive test rate was 4.72% in Kansas City, 7.11% in Jackson County, 7.88% in Clay County, 7.5% in Platte County, 6.6% in Johnson County and 17.4% in Wyandotte County.

The seven day rolling average for new cases was 497. One week ago, it was 438. Two weeks ago, it was 313.

There were two deaths reported Friday in Kansas City, raising the metro’s total to 320.

Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System said they were treating 36 patients at the hospital, up one from Thursday. Ten were in the intensive care unit.

After a slight decrease in hospitalizations earlier this week, the numbers are returning to a peak the hospital saw last week, said Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control.

On Friday, Missouri reported 50,323 cases to date, including 1,243 deaths. The positive test rate was 7%.

Kansas confirmed 27,812 cases to date, including 358 deaths. The positive test rate was 9.5%.

Across the country, more than 4.4 million people have contracted the virus and more than 152,000 people have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
