Baseball’s re-start takes another hit with Friday postponement of Cards-Brewers game

The St. Louis Cardinals are the latest team to have players test positive for COVID-19.

Friday’s day game between the Cardinals and Brewers in Milwaukee has been postponed. In a statement, Major League Baseball said two members Cardinals tested positive and the postponement will enough time for additional testing and contact tracing.

The 1:10 p.m., was to be the Brewers’ home opener.

Members of the Cardinals’ traveling party have been instructed to self-isolate in their hotel rooms after the unidentified players tested positive. The team had arrived in Milwaukee Wednesday night and had an off-day Thursday.

Postponements for COVID-19 have piled up since the 60-game Major League Baseball season began last Friday.

The Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies haven’t played since Sunday because of an outbreak among Marlins players and staff. Miami has had 19 positive cases of coronavirus infections.

Seventeen of those cases are players. The Marlins had remained in Philadelphia, receiving tests and treatment there, but the Associated Press reported Friday morning that they were finally en route back to South Florida by bus.

On Thursday, the Phillies learned that one of their coaches and a staff member had tested positive. The team quickly scrubbed three weekend games against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The New York Yankees had games postponed against Philadelphia this week, too.

The Cardinals and Brewers will play a double-header on Sunday. On Thursday, MLB announced that such doubleheaders would be seven innings instead of nine.

The Cardinals played in Minnesota on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Twins hosted Cleveland Thursday night, meaning the Indians likely used the same visiting clubhouse as St. Louis. Minnesota was scheduled to host the Indians again Friday night.
