Kansas City metro sees 73 new coronavirus cases for second consecutive day
For the second day in a row, the Kansas City metropolitan area added 73 new cases of the coronavirus.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas, has a total of 5,121 cases.
The number of new COVID-19 cases rose by 141 on Saturday, 58 on Sunday and 73 on Monday.
The overall positivity rate was 4.34% in Kansas City, 3.61% in Jackson County, 2.3% in Clay County, 3.9% in Johnson County and 15.7% in Wyandotte County.
According to the Clay County Public Health Center, an outbreak at a long-term care facility has infected 53 residents and staff.
Clay County added 40 cases Saturday, seven on Sunday, seven on Monday and nine on Tuesday.
Nursing facilities in the metro area have been hit hard during the pandemic, especially on the Kansas side. In Johnson County, nursing facility deaths — at 58 — account for nearly 82 percent of the county’s total.
The metro added two new deaths Tuesday, bringing the total to 202. One of the deaths was in Kansas City and one was in Platte County.
On Tuesday, Missouri reported 14,913 cases, including 586 hospitalizations and 840 deaths.
Kansas has at least 10,650 cases, including 936 hospitalizations and 236 deaths.
Nationwide, more than 1.9 million people have contracted the virus and more than 111,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
