Clay County nursing facility reports dozens of COVID-19 cases, two deaths

A nursing facility near Liberty has reported a large outbreak of COVID-19, marking the first long-term care facility with the coronavirus in Clay County.

According to an update posted Monday on the Clay County Public Health Center’s website, Pleasant Valley Manor Care Center has had 53 coronavirus cases, a mixture of residents and staff. The county also reported “two additional coronavirus-related deaths as a result of the facility’s outbreak.”

As of early last month, the Clay County Public Health Center told The Star that no coronavirus cases had been linked to skilled nursing or assisted living facilities in the county.

Long-term care facilities in the metro area have been hit hard during the pandemic, especially on the Kansas side. In Johnson County, nursing facility deaths — at 58 — account for nearly 82 percent of the county’s total.

Nine facilities have ongoing outbreaks, with two facilities alone with a combined 156 cases and 24 deaths. As of Tuesday morning, Brighton Gardens of Prairie Village has reported 97 cases and 20 deaths and Olathe’s Villa St. Francis has had 59 cases and four residents have died.

As of mid-May, nearly 80 long-term care facilities in Missouri had reported two or more cases. Though the state’s Department of Health and Senior Services does not track nursing home COVID-19 deaths, residents have died at several facilities in Missouri — including in Cass and Jackson counties.
