Two more coronavirus deaths reported in Kansas City metro as area adds 30 cases

Two more people have died from the new coronavirus in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The deaths were reported Tuesday in Kansas City and Johnson County.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has recorded 164 COVID-19 deaths.

The metro added 30 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total to 3,370.

The past few days have brought fewer new cases, with 63 additional cases on Saturday, 48 on Sunday and 33 on Monday.

Edward Ellerbeck, chair of population health at the University of Kansas Health System, said the area’s infection rate has come down.

“We’ve really had a good success with the social distancing program,” he said. “I think we really did bend the curve effectively.”

But experts warn that could change as areas reopen.

“As we open, I think we all expect some degree of rise in the number of new cases per day,” said David Wild, vice president of performance improvement at the health system.

Missouri has 11,080 cases including 616 deaths. A total of 154,110 tests have been conducted.

Kansas has at least 8,340 cases including 173 deaths. Another 58,650 tests have been negative.

Nationwide, more than 1.5 million people have been infected and more than 91,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
