Additional COVID-19 death reported Sunday in KC; nearly 50 new cases across metro

An additional death and 48 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus were reported Sunday by health officials across the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The region — which includes Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas — had recorded 161 deaths as of Sunday afternoon. The additional death was in Kansas City, bringing its total to 19.

Health officials in the metro recorded an additional 63 new cases Saturday, 64 on Friday and 46 on Thursday.

In total, 3,307 residents have been infected by COVID-19 in the region. That’s up from 2,956 a week before and 2,384 two weeks earlier on May 3, according to data maintained by The Star.

Wyandotte County continues to outpace other counties in the metro in the number of positive test results, with 1,154 cases and 70 deaths. More than 350 people had recovered while 30 remained hospitalized, according to county data.

Johnson County has recorded 646 confirmed infections and 56 deaths.

In Kansas City, 895 people have tested positive. In Jackson County, 446 have been infected and 15 have died.

Clay County reported 114 cases and one death. Platte County has seen 52 residents test positive.

As of Sunday, Missouri has reported 10,789 cases and 594 deaths. About half of the cases confirmed across the state were found in the St. Louis region, with 5,713 cases and 429 deaths in the county and city combined.

Kansas, which has tested fewer people than Missouri, has reported 7,886 cases and 172 deaths as of Friday.

Gov. Laura Kelly is scheduled to participate in a meeting Wednesday with President Donald Trump and Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, though it remained unclear Sunday if it will be about the pandemic.
