Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly to visit White House for meeting with President Trump

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly is scheduled to visit the White House on Wednesday for a meeting with President Donald Trump.

Topics of discussion will include Kansas’ phased reopening and statewide testing strategy.

Kelly and Trump will also talk about protecting the country’s food supply chain, supporting the state’s farmers and partnering to “ensure the health and safety of food supply workers” during the coronavirus outbreak, according to Kelly’s office.

In a statement, Kelly said she looked forward to her discussions with the president.

“Our continued emphasis is on protecting Kansans’ health and well-being, and helping the state recover from a public health crisis that has exacted a painful financial toll on many,” she said. “The economic damage will be long lasting, and will require collaboration at every level.”

The meeting comes as Kansas continues to feel the effects of the pandemic. As of Sunday, 7,886 people in Kansas have been infected by COVID-19 and 172 have died, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Of those with the virus, 724 Kansans have been hospitalized.

More than 61,000 Kansas residents have been tested for COVID-19.
