FedEx facility in Olathe identified as site of cluster of coronavirus cases
FedEx confirmed Friday that workers from its facility in Olathe have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement from the company.
The positive tests are considered to be the first cluster of coronavirus cases associated to a workplace in Johnson County, which announced nine cases from the facility on Thursday without identifying the name of the affected business.
A spokesperson from FedEx Ground issued the following statement on Friday afternoon, confirming cases among workers at their Olathe facility:
“The safety of FedEx Ground team members, vendors and customers is of the utmost importance as we continue to provide essential services to our customers and communities.
We are working cooperatively with the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment in their efforts to mitigate community spread by offering voluntary COVID-19 testing to employees and vendors at our Olathe facility. While there have been some reported cases among workers, there is no indication that the virus has been spread within the workplace.”
Two hundred additional employees from the facility were being tested, the county health department said earlier this week.
Amid the coronavirus crisis, FedEx said it has been following guidance from health officials and providing hand soap, disinfecting wipes, masks, latex gloves and hand sanitizer to employees. It said it has also implemented temperature checks, symptom screenings and changes to its process to allow for social distancing.
In Johnson County, where the FedEx facility is located, at least 634 people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 55 have died, according to data provided by the county on Friday.
