Health officials report nearly 1,900 COVID-19 cases, 114 deaths across KC metro
The number of people infected with the new coronavirus rose to 1,893 in the Kansas City metro area Sunday.
The region — which includes Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas — had recorded 114 deaths as of Sunday afternoon.
Wyandotte County continues to outpace other counties in the metro in the number of positive test results, with 565 cases and 51 deaths. More than 110 people had recovered while 28 remained hospitalized, according to county data.
Johnson County has recorded 430 confirmed infections and 38 deaths. The county has seen the third highest number of positive tests in Kansas, behind Wyandotte County and Ford County, which has reported 459 cases, according to state data.
In Kansas City, 493 people have tested positive and 15 have died. In Jackson County, 307 have been infected and nine have died.
Clay County reported 67 cases and one death. Platte County has seen 31 residents test positive.
As of Sunday, Missouri has reported 6,997 cases and 274 deaths. More than half of the cases confirmed across the state were reported in the St. Louis region, with 3,801 cases and 177 deaths in the county and city combined.
Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced Friday he would extend the state’s emergency declaration through June 15, though the state’s stay-at-home order will end May 3.
In Kansas, which has ranked last in the U.S. in testing per capita, officials recorded 3,174 cases and 118 deaths.
Kansas’ stay-at-home order is effective through May 3.
Nationwide, the virus has infected more than 957,000 people and killed 54,435, according to Johns Hopkins University.
