Kansas City metro confirms 62 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, 3 more deaths reported
Sixty-two new cases of COVID-19 and three more deaths were reported in the Kansas City metro area Saturday.
The increase brings the area — which includes Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas — to 1,864 total cases and 113 deaths.
The number of new cases increased this week by 22 on Monday, 41 on Tuesday, 69 on Wednesday, 43 on Thursday and 68 on Friday.
Johnson County, Wyandotte County and Kansas City each reported one new death Saturday.
The largest number of cases and deaths in the area was reported in Wyandotte County where 50 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported and 555 residents have tested positive, up from 520 on Friday.
Statewide, Kansas reported 279 new cases Saturday, with the majority coming from Seward, Ford, Finney and Lyon counties where additional resources were sent to contain outbreaks connected to the meatpacking industry.
Missouri reported 201 new cases, a 3% increase from Friday.
Both states are preparing to lift statewide stay-at-home orders which expire on May 3. Kansas City and Platte and Jackson counties have extended their local stay-at-home orders through May 15.
Nationwide, the rapidly spreading virus has infected more than 926,000 people, killing more than 53,000 according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
