Wyandotte County confirms four more deaths from coronavirus, Johnson County adds two

Four more people in Wyandotte County and two more in Johnson County have died from the new coronavirus, according to statistics from health officials updated Tuesday morning.

Both counties now count 10 COVID-19 related deaths. Details of the deaths were not immediately available. Statewide, at least 29 people in Kansas have died from the virus.

At least 190 people in Wyandotte County, 217 in Johnson County and 845 statewide have tested positive for the new coronavirus. The virus was confirmed for about 9 percent of the Kansans tested.

In Wyandotte County 59 people using a self-report form probably have the virus, health officials said, but those cases haven’t been confirmed through testing.

Wyandotte County announced last week it would ramp up its enforcement of local and statewide stay-at-home orders after the county saw a 191 percent increases in cases in one week. The county reported that 19 patients and staff members at the Riverbend Post Acute Rehabilitation center had tested positive for the virus.

The first COVID-19 related death in the county and the state was reported on March 12 when a man in his 70s who lived in a nursing home was posthumously diagnosed with the new coronavirus.

By August 4, researchers at the University of Washington predict, 265 Kansans will have died from COVID-19.

Nationwide, the virus has infected more than 368,000 people and killed more than 11,000 according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
