Leavenworth reports its first COVID-19 death, a woman in her 50s

A Leavenworth woman in her 50s died from the new coronavirus, county officials reported Friday.

The woman, who officials said had underlying health conditions, is the first person in the county to die from the rapidly spreading virus.

She was brought to an emergency room before her death, according to a news release.

“Losing a life in our community is never easy, and we share condolences with the family and respect their privacy during these difficult times,” said Jamie Miller, Leavenworth County health officer.

Leavenworth County has confirmed 29 cases of COVID-19, according to county data.

Statewide, at least 17 people, including three announced Friday in Johnson County, have died from the virus

At least 620 people in the state have been infected, according to state health officials.

Nationwide the virus has infected more than 258,000 people and killed over 6,500 according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
