Three more people die from coronavirus in Johnson County, officials say Friday
Three more people in Johnson County died from the new coronavirus, county officials announced Friday morning.
Few details were provided about the deaths, which bring the state total of COVID-19 related fatalities to at least 16 and the county total to seven.
Johnson County has seen the largest outbreak of the new coronavirus in the state. As of Friday morning the county had confirmed 172 cases of the virus, 13 more than were reported Thursday. About 11% of county residents who have been tested had the virus.
According to data on the county’s website three of the people in the county who died from the virus were in their 80s, three were in their 70s and one was in their 40s.
The county’s first death was reported on March 21.
In Wyandotte County, where the second highest number of cases has been reported in the state, county officials reported 13 new cases Friday morning, bringing the total to 119. Five people in the county have died.
Statewide, at least 553 people in Kansas have been infected. Deaths have been reported in Johnson, Wyandotte, Sedgewick, Coffey, Shawnee and Crawford counties.
Nationwide, the rapidly spreading virus has infected more than 245,000 people and killed more than 6,000, according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
