Johnson County reports 4th coronavirus related death, 11th in Kansas

A Johnson County man in his 40s died from the new coronavirus, the county health department announced Thursday.

The man, who the health department said had underlying health conditions, is the 11th COVID-19-related death in Kansas and fourth in Johnson County.

Four deaths have also been reported in Wyandotte County, as well as one each in Coffey, Crawford and Shawnee counties in Kansas.

In Johnson County, a Lenexa man in his 70s died March 21 and a woman in her 90s died Saturday. The county’s third death was reported Tuesday.

The county reported 15 additional cases Thursday bringing the total to 159.

Statewide, at least 482 people have been infected with the rapidly spreading virus.

University of Washington research, which assumes full social distancing measures, predicts 640 Kansans will die from the virus by August.

In Missouri, 1,581 people have been infected and 18 have died, according to state health officials.

Missouri has reported three times the number of people testing positive as Kansas has, but has also tested three times as many people. In both states, people have tested positive at rates close to 8 percent.

The virus has infected over 216,000 people and killed over 5,000 nationwide according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
