Second COVID-19 patient found by Kansas City VA Medical Center showed no symptoms
A 64-year-old veteran who showed no symptoms of the coronavirus disease is the second Kansas City VA Medical Center patient to test positive for COVID-19, the hospital announced on Facebook Thursday.
The veteran had gone to the medical center Monday after encountering a suspected COVID-19-positive person at work. The medical center screened the veteran and tested him for the virus because of his possible exposure and because he is immune-compromised, the hospital said.
The veteran returned to the medical center Wednesday for follow-up lab work. The positive test results were received later in the day and the veteran was notified. The veteran is in self-quarantined at his home, the hospital said.
The medical center said staff who were in contact with the patient were wearing appropriate protection. It was collaborating with local health department for monitoring.
The risk of transmission to other patients and staff remains minimal, the medical center said. It continues to screen veterans and staff who present with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath who meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s criteria for evaluation of COVID-19 infection.
