Leawood resident has tested positive for coronavirus, city announces
A person who visited Leawood City Hall last week has since tested positive for the novel coronavirus, and the building will be closed Tuesday, according to city officials.
A city spokesman released a written statement Monday saying a resident who visited the city hall March 10 has since tested positive, on a preliminary basis, for the COVID-19 virus.
The coronavirus pandemic has prompted city, state and federal officials to issue declaration of emergency, including in the Kansas City region. Worldwide there have been more than 170,000 confirmed cases, with at least 3,700 reported in the United States.
As of Monday, Kansas had recorded 11 cases, with eight of them found in Johnson County.
In Leawood, county and state health officials have notified residents and city employees who were in direct contact with the person who tested positive, according to the city’s statement.
The city hall will remain closed Tuesday but calls will be answered, the city said. Crews have been working to disinfect the work site.
Other city facilities will be open, but group meetings, classes and other public events are canceled for the foreseeable future.
All Leawood municipal court hearings and walk-in dockets are suspended through April 8.
New court dates will be mailed to defendants at the address on file with the court.
The public is encouraged to conduct business by phone or online as much as possible.
