Former KC-area BBQ restaurant to become Mexican fast-casual location
After roughly 15 years as a barbecue chain restaurant, a space in Kansas City’s Northland will take on a new life.
The old Dickey’s Barbecue Pit at 9000 NW Skyview Ave. will soon become a Qdoba, the fast-casual Mexican chain said.
A spokeswoman for Qdoba told The Star via email that it would open in the space in early 2027.
With four existing locations in the metro, Qdoba serves customizable burritos, bowls, quesadillas, tacos and more. It began in Denver in 1995 and now has at least 800 restaurants across the country, according to its website.
Its existing spot in the Northland is at 5255 N. Antioch Road. Its has other KC-area locations in Overland Park at 13641 Metcalf Ave.; in Raymore at 1931 W. Foxfood Drive; and in Blue Springs at 701 NW Highway 7, Suite G.
In 2019, it closed its locations in Mission and in Westport.
Dickey’s, on the other hand, closed its Skyview Avenue spot more than a year ago. According to reporting by industry publication Restaurant Business, nearly half of Dickey’s franchisees either closed or sold their stores in 2024.
No locations remain in the KC area, though it once had spots at 2510 NE Vivion Road and 7214 W. 121st St. in Overland Park.
Dickey’s touts a “remarkable rebound” on its website, saying it opened several dozen stores in 2025.
“Dickey’s has bucked negative industry trends and media narratives. For too long, news coverage fixated on the brand’s closures in a vacuum, without the crucial context of a widespread industry-wide crisis,” its website reads. “The reality is that Dickey’s closures were part of a difficult but necessary process to right the ship; a process many of its competitors are still struggling to complete.”
