Tikka marsala pizza? Indian fusion restaurant opens in Overland Park
A family-owned Indian fusion making homemade traditional meals with a twist has opened in Overland Park.
Urban Eats, owned by husband and wife Jaspan Singh and Manjit Kaur, opened last week at 11832 Quivira Road, next to their Indian grocery store, Taj Grocers.
“You have made a dream we once thought was impossible feel so much closer than we ever imagined,” the couple said in an Instagram post. “Seeing you enjoy the food we’ve poured our passion and love into means to the world to our family.”
Urban Eats serves up tandoor bites, small plates, street food and curry. Fusion bites include chicken tandoori pizza, paneer, tikka marsala pizza, chicken tikka burrito and paneer naan burrito.
The idea for the restaurant came a few years ago, when Kaur and Singh began making fusion dishes and realized Kansas City was missing a place where tradition met new ideas like Indian fusion pizza and homemade sweets.
“Over the years, we continued sharing our love for Indian cuisine through catering events, weekly meal boxes and homemade Indian sweets. What started with making fresh jalebi has grown into creating over a dozen varieties of traditional Indian sweets enjoyed by our customers,” the post said.
Kaur and Singh’s family moved to the United States in 2008 and opened their grocery store in 2017, according to their daughter Simi Kaur. Manjit Kaur and Singh have previous experience catering and working in Indian restaurants, where they said they learned the importance of authentic flavors and fresh ingredients to share the food and love for their culture they grew up with. Manjit Kaur’s sweets in particular became very popular.
‘Indian fusion pizzas, burgers, burritos and that stuff are really popular in other states and bigger cities,” Simi Kaur said. “ We didn’t really have that many options to get that here in Kansas, so we thought that was something that was missing in Kansas City.”
Urban Eats currently has a selection of over 16 different pastry/sweet options baked fresh by the family, like Rasmali (milk, lemon juice, sugar, cardamom, almonds, pistachios; $4.99/cup) and Milk Cake (sugar, milk and lemon juice; $12.99/pound).
“We are beyond excited to finally serve our community, especially our loyal customers who have been asking for this moment for years,” the post said.
Urban Eats is open every day from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 9 p.m.
