Popular Overland Park bookstore will double the size of its shop

A popular Overland Park bookstore is expanding its storefront.

Monstera’s Books, at 7930 Floyd St., announced in an Instagram post Friday that it signed the lease on the space next door, formerly the Torreador Restaurant.

“We’ll be working to give this space the same cozy, welcoming feel as the Monstera’s you know – and soon we will have more space for community events, books, new products, and more,” the post said.

Monstera’s, an independent bookstore that sells both new and used books, plants, stationery, records, gifts and more, was started in March 2024 by owner Kate Wieners.

Just 18 months later in summer 2025, the shop suffered moderate smoke damage after a fire at the Torreador restaurant erupted next door. An exact cause couldn’t be determined, but Jason Rhodes with the Overland Park Fire Department said that it was not suspicious.

Monstera’s worked hard on renovations and held pop-up book sales under a tent outside the building for weeks. It reopened in December to a crowd of excited customers.

The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
