Openings & Closings

A South Kansas City bar and restaurant will close after 5 years in business

The only Kansas City location of a longtime Kansas restaurant chain will close this weekend, according to a press release and a social media post from owners.

Tanner’s Bar & Grill posted Tuesday morning on Facebook that its Red Bridge location, 11134 Holmes Road, would shut its doors for good June 28.

“We’re grateful for the incredible guests and dedicated team at Tanner’s Red Bridge,” the post said.

A press release from K.C. Hopps, Ltd., the owner of the Tanner’s Red Bridge location, confirmed the imminent closure, adding that they decided not to renew the restaurant’s lease at the Red Bridge Shopping Center.

Employees at the Red Bridge location could get jobs at other restaurants from the ownership group, which include O’Dowd’s Gastrobar, Stroud’s and Blue Moose Bar & Grill.

The Red Bridge location of Tanner’s opened in 2021, taking over a location of Blue Moose Bar & Grill. The Tanner’s brand entered a license agreement with KC Hopps, who oversaw operations only at this location of Tanner’s.

The bar and grill has multiple locations on the Kansas side of the state line — Lenexa, Overland Park, Shawnee and Kansas City, Kansas — and several eateries in Nebraska. Before its Red Bridge spot, Tanner’s had a Kansas City restaurant in Waldo that closed in 2018. Its first location opened in 1985 in Lenexa.

Tanner’s is known for its menu of American bar food, like its “Chicken Lips” tenders, “Booga” burger options, burnt end mac and cheese, and an array of fried appetizers. The restaurants also offer a full bar and have rotating food and drink specials.

With multiple TVs in each restaurant, Tanner’s is also the kind of place to catch a game while dining in. When it opened, the Red Bridge location said it would have more than 50 HD TVs as well as live music and games.

In its closure announcement, Tanner’s said it would continue to advertise pop-up specials during its last week in Red Bridge.
