Local thrift chain closing Raytown store. It’s heading to new KC-area town
A local family-owned thrift store chain will be closing its Raytown location this weekend.
Maj-R Thrift at 7506 Raytown Road will be open through Sunday, according to owner Rhonda Edwards. After that, the crew will spend a few weeks moving and setting up the new location at 6220 Nieman Road at the Nieman Shopping Center in Shawnee.
A date has not been set for the opening, but Edwards hopes it is sometime this month.
The Raytown store was not in the condition the business required, Edwards said.
“We band-aided it as long as we could, but we just don’t have $160,000 to fix it,” Edwards said.
According to its lease, Maj-R Thrift would be financially responsible for repairs the family wanted done. The end of the lease seemed like a good turning point for them.
Despite that, Edwards said they are sad to leave the location.
“We’ve had a couple that have come crying, actually crying, because they don’t want us to leave, which, you know, I get that, but we just really are out of options right now,” she said. “I didn’t realize we had such an impact on the community, but it feels great.”
Maj-R Thrift was started by Edwards’ parents over 50 years ago. She owns the Grandview and Raytown (soon to be Shawnee) locations, and her sister and her husband own the stores in Olathe, Topeka and Gladstone.
“We’re excited to be in Shawnee, but we’ll miss Raytown,” she said.
The new location will keep the same hours as the Raytown one. It’ll be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
