About two dozen treated after elevated CO levels found at KC’s SubTropolis
About two dozen people were treated after firefighters responded to reports of an unconscious person in the SubTropolis underground business complex in Kansas City’s Northland.
Firefighters responded about 8:40 a.m. Friday on reports of an unconscious person at the complex at 8800 N.E. Underground Drive, said Battalion Chief Riley Nolan with the Kansas City Fire Department.
The call was upgraded to a hazardous material response after others reported feeling ill, Nolan said. The part of the complex was evacuated, and hazmat crews entered to monitor the air quality. They found a carbon monoxide level of 30 parts per million.
Twenty-one people were treated and evaluated at the scene, and ambulances took four people to hospitals with minor symptoms.
Shortly before 10:45 a.m., hazmat crews completed ventilation of the affected area and carbon monoxide levels returned to zero parts per million. Businesses in the affected area returned to normal operations.
