Indian ice cream shop opens in Johnson County, with one-of-a-kind flavors
There are plenty of ice cream shops in Johnson County and the greater Kansas City area, but none quite like Naturalz.
At the new shop, which opened at 6301 W. 135th St. next to Desi Chowrastha, rich flavors like chikoo and kesar pista sit in an ice cream case beside more common ones like cotton candy dream and butterscotch swirl.
The Washington-based chain sources its fruit and other various ingredients from India. At its packaging facility in San Antonio, Texas, it mixes the fresh fruits into creamy concoctions.
Inside the store, employees press waffle batter into fresh cones and scoop figgy fusion and orange cream Biscoff.
The Overland Park location is Naturalz’s fifth spot. The others are in San Antonio and Washington state.
Chandra anne is part-owner of the KC area store with his cousin, Satya Kusupati. The pair wanted to bring a different taste to Kansas City’s ice cream scene, starting with the fruits and flavors they grew up loving in India.
“All the ingredients we will try (to be) as natural as possible,” anne said. “These flavors you cannot get anywhere in Kansas City.”
In addition to scoops, Naturalz offers falooda, a cold drink mix similar to a milkshake.
The spot has been open for over a week, so more flavors are on the way soon. They plan on tailoring the offerings to what local customers want to see.
It’s planning a grand opening soon, though its date has not been announced yet, but customers are encouraged to follow Naturalz’s social media pages for updates on when it’ll be. At the launch, Naturalz plans to debut a few more flavors like tutti frutti, roasted almonds and more.
Customers can expect deals and freebies on grand opening day. The cousins hope Kansas Citians stop by and expand their palate.
“We just wanted to bring some uniqueness to the area,” Ganne said.
Texas-based Indian restaurant Desi Chowrastha opened in the Corbin Park shopping center last fall, spanning over 7,500 square feet and making it the largest Indian restaurant in Overland Park.
