Johnson County-based franchise closes multiple KC-area Wendy’s locations
“We are closed,” reads the sign outside an Overland Park Wendy’s.
It’s one of a few Wendy’s locations that have recently closed in the Kansas City area.
Legacy Restaurant Group, a Wendy’s franchise based in Lenexa, told The Star on Friday that it has closed three fast-food locations: 11001 Roe Ave. in Overland Park, 9161 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, and 7933 State Line Road.
Felix Tollinche, president and CEO of LRG, said the closures were part of a companywide initiative to close restaurants and open new ones in busy commercial areas.
The plan is to open three restaurants in their place, though Tollinche did not have additional information or a timeline to share.
“We’re really committed and excited about Wendy’s presence in the Kansas City market,” Tollinche said.
LRG was founded about 25 years ago and owns dozens of restaurants in Kansas and Missouri. It still has spots in the KC area, including 8699 Bluejacket in Lenexa, 8220 W. 135th St. in Overland Park, and 13601 Madison Ave.
In a February earnings call, Wendy’s interim CEO Ken Cook told investors the company would lose about 5% to 6% of nearly 6,000 restaurants in the first half of 2026, according to USA Today.
Burger-centric restaurant Wendy’s was founded in 1969 and is headquartered in Ohio.
