A new Costco will be built in Lawrence — the city’s first. Here’s what to know
Costco Wholesale aims to open its first location in Lawrence this fall.
Slated to open before Thanksgiving, the 166,000-square-foot, warehouse-style grocery store will be built inside The Mercato development northeast of Sixth Street and Highway 10, according to a release from developer Lane4.
Complete with all its typical products — a membership program, bakery section, floral department, produce and more — the new store will feature an onsite gas station with 24 pumps.
“We’re thrilled to help bring Costco to Lawrence and see this as a major destination anchor that draws shoppers from across Douglas County and Lawrence’s surrounding communities,” said Becca Koester, representative of ownership group K-10/40 Development, L.C.
Costco currently has five locations in the Kansas City metro: 1600 NW 88th St.; 241 Linwood Blvd.; 19094 E. Valley View Parkway in Independence; 12221 Blue Valley Parkway in Overland Park; and 9350 Marshall Drive in Lenexa.
Another location is planned in Lee’s Summit at U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri Route 291.
Meanwhile, at the Costco in midtown, rumors swirl about whether the company will pivot the business model of that location away and nix its food court and other amenities.
Pad sites within The Mercato development include Braum’s and Truity Credit Union. Neighboring tenants include Lawrence Memorial Hospital and StoneHill Hotel.
