Beloved Olathe cookie shop will open second KC-area location

A well-loved Olathe cookie shop is opening its second location in another Kansas City suburb Saturday.

Brown Suga — run by sisters Ebony Paul-Harris and Asia Lockett (with lots of help from their mother Reva Paul) — was founded during the pandemic when Paul-Harris began baking to cope with uncertain times.

“What started as healing turned into purpose. And that purpose has always been the same: to bring people joy through food, to give you a reason to celebrate the ordinary moments and the extraordinary ones,” they said in an Instagram post.

Brown Suga offers flavors like gooey butter, lemon crinkle, cookies and cream and monster, as well as seasonal flavors on rotation. The new storefront will be located at 11529 Ash St. off Leawood Town Center, and offer new menu items. The first location in Olathe opened in 2023.

“We’re especially excited about creating a more intentional experience at this location — from our rotating menu and new desserts to giving our team better work-life balance as we grow,” Ebony Paul-Harris said in a statement .

The opening, to Paul-Harris, feels like just another store, and more of a reflection of how far they have come and what’s in store for the future.

“What feels most meaningful to us is that this second location represents sustainable growth,” Ebony Paul-Harris said . “Brown Suga started as pop-ups, and being able to open another storefront while staying true to our team, our community, and the way we make things has been really important to us.”

The opportunity to open a second Johnson County location, owners said, fell in their lap unexpectantly, adding they thought long and hard about stepping into something new during uncertain times before deciding to take the leap. “So even when the world feels heavy, we believe it matters to keep showing up,” they said in the post. “To keep creating spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and worth celebrating. That’s what led us to take this big, scary, beautiful next step.”

On Friday, the shop posted photos of the family on Facebook preparing the storefront ahead of the opening.

“Not everyone gets to build something like this with their sister, and we don’t take that for granted, not for one second. Going through life shifts together, leaning on each other when it’s heavy, celebrating when it’s sweet,” the Facebook post said.

Brown Suga’s new location will be open from Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Olathe location at 1066 W Santa Fe St. is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
